Project selection criteria

  • At least 70% of the budget must be spent on wages for unskilled workers
  • Purchase of project material should be not more than 30% of the budget
  • Project support and supervision not to be more than 10% of projects budget
  • The ratios can be varied depending on the type and scope of the project
  • Projects should be productive, economically and environmentally sustainable, with a clear strategy and funding for future maintenance

Selected projects should be included in the district or urban authority development plan

Selected projects should be fully endorsed by the local authority development committee

All projects must comply with national environmental control legislation

Projects should be located within five kilometres (or one hour walking distance for the participants

Projects should be suitable for the participation of men and women

Projects should be for the benefit of the community

  • Construction and rehabilitation of community feeder roads
  • Rehabilitation of dams for irrigation
  • Construction or rehabilitation of water canals for irrigation schemes
  • Land clearance for irrigation schemes
  • Gulley reclamation
  • Land husbandry and soil conservation measures
  • Construction or rehabilitation of dip tanks
  • Construction of market stalls for selling farm produce
